The Essential Estate Planning Checklist

While death is a topic many of us would rather not ponder, planning for it is important. You cannot always be sure what life will throw at you, but you can prepare by utilizing estate planning services. Make sure that your loved ones and assets are protected by having an up-to-date will and/or trust, powers of attorney and living wills. Another important step you should take to help your loved ones is to have all important documents organized and kept somewhere safe like a safe deposit box or fireproof box. Below is a helpful checklist to help you be better prepared:

  • Will and/or trust documents
  • Social Security numbers
  • Credit card account numbers and statements
  • Certificates of deposit
  • Retirement account statements (IRAs, 401(k)s, pension plans)
  • Nonretirement account statements (brokerage, mutual fund, annuities, etc.)
  • Current bank statements
  • Property deeds and titles
  • Mortgage and other loan statements
  • Household budget documents (utility and service bills, HOA paperwork)
  • Insurance policies
  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  • Divorce or child support documents (if applicable)
  • Birth certificates of minors (if applicable)
  • Military discharge papers (if applicable)
  • Tax returns
  • Passwords for accounts and social media
